Sushi and omakase in Saigon: questions from Reddit

Reddit discussions about sushi and omakase in Saigon raise practical questions: what kind of meal to choose, how to compare prices, and whether a solo or last-minute dinner is possible. Here, the Kappou Nishiyama team answers those questions from the perspective of our own restaurant, with current menu information and a little of our history.
The linked discussions are sources for the questions, not endorsements of Kappou Nishiyama. Our menu, drinks and founder details below are first-party restaurant information.
What should I look for when choosing sushi or omakase in Saigon?
In an r/sushi discussion about Ho Chi Minh City, a visitor asks about both quality and value, with a preference for traditional sushi rather than fusion rolls. That is a useful place to begin: decide what you want from the meal before comparing restaurant names.
Are you looking for a few individual dishes, or a course that moves through several preparations? What does the published menu include? Is the price a starting figure or the amount payable after service and tax?
At Kappou Nishiyama, our standard lunch combines seasonal appetizers, sushi, tempura, miso soup and dessert. Standard dinner also includes sashimi. The experience is therefore broader than sushi alone, with course details shown in our current omakase menu.
We also offer seasonal and Premium courses. All fish is imported from Japan; the particular fish and course details may change with availability. Choosing between the menus is a question of which progression suits your visit—not simply how many sushi pieces you expect.
How much is omakase at Kappou Nishiyama?
Our current course prices are:
| Course | Price | Service availability |
|---|---|---|
| Standard lunch | 1,000,000 VND++ | Monday–Saturday lunch |
| Standard dinner | 1,500,000 VND++ | Dinner daily |
| Seasonal course, currently Aki | 2,000,000 VND++ | Lunch or dinner during opening hours |
| Premium | 3,000,000 VND++ | Lunch or dinner during opening hours |
For these food menus, “++” means the listed price excludes a 5% service charge and applicable VAT of 8–10%. Aki is the current seasonal course name; its name, ingredients and composition may rotate.
The standard lunch and dinner courses also have an optional +500,000 VND++ refill package, with a 60-minute refill period. Under the current menu terms, each leftover reordered portion is charged at 100,000 VND. The package is an add-on, not included in the base course price.
For a useful price comparison, check the course itself, any optional extras, and the service/tax basis together. See the course details and original menus.
Can I book an omakase dinner for one person or on the same day?
A diner in the r/VietNam discussion “Good tasting menu in HCMC?” asks about omakase or a tasting menu for a solo visit that evening. It is a reminder to check the reservation details as well as the food.
For Kappou Nishiyama, use DiningCity to check your intended visit and make a reservation. For a solo or same-day request, confirm the booking before travelling; this guide does not indicate live seat availability.
If you need help with a request, contact the restaurant on +84 919 915 223. Reservations are managed through DiningCity.
Can I have sake, junmai daiginjo or umeshu with the meal?
Our published drinks menu lists Japanese sake including Dassai 23, 39 and 45, Kubota Manju junmai daiginjo, and Urakasumi Junmai. Shichiken sparkling sake and Hakkaisan Honjozo are also listed.
For umeshu, the menu includes Rose and Obaachan. Other choices include shochu, whisky, wine and Sapporo beer. Non-alcoholic options include green tea, barley tea, soft drinks, and still or sparkling water.
The drinks menu shows serving sizes and prices. Its prices are stated in thousands of VND and exclude a 5% service charge and 10% VAT. Please confirm current availability with the restaurant if you have a particular bottle in mind.
These are menu-listed drink choices, rather than a fixed pairing package included with an omakase course.
